I started watching Star Trek: The Next Generation,
a science fiction television series, when I was nine years old. I
immediately attached to the character Deanna Troi, who functions as a counselor
on a starship. This project turned into a personal exploration, a
way of understanding Troi in terms of gender and ethnicity and in turn,
understanding myself better.
This project isn't only about analyzing the gendered and
racialized character Deanna Troi, but about understanding how media impacts
society by beginning on a personal level. I have included questions
"to think on" at the end of each section, in hopes that this can be personal
for you as well.
